The Importance of Maintaining Your Emission System

Posted on Mar 12, 2015

Heavy traffic through a city streetDid you know that more than FOUR TONS of new greenhouse gases are floating around our atmosphere each year because of our driving habits? I know, I had to pick my jaw up off the floor too. And just last year alone, Americans drove almost three trillion miles – according to an estimate from the U.S. Federal Highway Administration. It’s true, we drive a lot – and for good reason: we all have busy lives and our cars are invaluable, but so is our planet.

At Master Tech Auto Repair, we feel strongly about practicing sustainability, which is evident from the solar paneling on our building to the emissions tests we run on our clients’ vehicles. Emissions tests are a key part of car maintenance and are good all around because they keep you car running better, longer and more efficiently; and they ultimately keep our environment cleaner.

What is an auto emission system (E.S.)?
“Your car’s emission system keeps the engine running cleanly and efficiently in all sorts of operating conditions. A steady or flashing warning light on your vehicle dashboard indicates a problem that is currently happening and may require immediate attention. Failure to do so can reduce your gas mileage or cause your vehicle to pollute.” [source]

What does my emission system do?
Your E.S. controls the exhaust and pollutants that emit from your vehicle, and it does this by employing several sensors and computerized engine controls. The E.S. “substantially reduces harmful gases such as carbon monoxide, unburned hydrocarbons and oxides of nitrogen and, by law, must be maintained in operating condition.” [source]

Several things can happen to your vehicle when your E.S. is neglected. Your sensors can become damaged or worn, your vacuum hoses can become dry or cracked, your fuel quality decreases (along with your mileage) and your vehicle ages more quickly than it should.

Thankfully, maintaining your emission system is as easy as scheduling an appointment at Master Tech Auto Repair shop and letting our ASE Certified Master Technicians run the test, repair any emission-related issues and get you on your way. Although we specialize in Ford repair, we work on all makes and models. By getting your emission system checked with the auto repair experts at Master Tech, you can feel good about taking care of your car and the environment.
