Overlooked Maintenance, Unexpected Costs

Posted on Apr 23, 2015

When you think of car maintenance, there are certain things that jump to mind; changing the oil and filter, rotating tires, etc. But some of the lesser common aspects of your vehicle need attention on a regular basis and can cost a lot if they are overlooked.

ShocksShock Absorbers

  • Pay Attention to Feel – The most important step in car shocks maintenance is simply to remember that your car has them be aware of any change in how your suspension feels.
  • Listen for Rattles – Shocks need a firm mounting to work properly, so don’t dismiss those little noises since they could be telling you to replace loose bolts and blushings. Some makes and models require the replacement of the shock absorbers when they start to make a ruckus.
  • Don’t Wait to Replace – Worn shocks make for a bad ride; they can harm overall suspension performance, reduce brake efficiency, cornering ability and antilock brake system effectiveness. So when shocks go bad, it’s out with the old and in with the new.

A cracked windshieldLights, Windshields and Wipers

  • Replace Wipers Regularly – The American Optometric Association reports that 90% of all driving decisions are based solely on our ability to count on visual clues. Having the good quality windshield wipers and replacing them regularly is essential for safe driving.
  • Fix Chips and Cracks ASAP – Don’t leave chips or cracks unfixed. What starts small nick can lead to the entire windshield breaking, which can not only be more expensive to fix, but extremely dangerous if you’re driving when it shatters. Damaged glass can also cut the rubber wiping element of your wiper blades, causing streaking and poor visibility.
  • Check Lights – Make sure all your lights; headlights, brake lights and signals – are working properly. Doing this on a weekly basis ensures that you’ll have the best driving visibility at night, and will keep you from getting an expensive ticket.

With a little preventive measures, you and your vehicle will be in the best shape for safe driving and saving money in the long run. Call us today if any of these maintenance tips apply to you.
