Is Your Car Ready for Colder Autumn Weather?

Now that it is October and the kids are back in school, it is time to start thinking about the chilly Fall weather that is coming to Santa Fe. Besides stocking up on firewood and cleaning the chimney, your car needs some attention too. A small investment in time and money now can mean big savings and a lot less hassle.

Antifreeze – Check that your antifreeze level is correct to protect your engine during colder weather. A little preparation now will keep you from being stranded roadside and damaging to your engine. This can be a very costly problem.

Battery – Make sure that your battery passes a load test by taking it to a local mechanic to test. Check that your cables are clean and tightly secured.

Wiper Fluid and Blades – Wiper blades should be in good shape. If they are dry or cracked, replace them. Check that your wiper fluid dispensers are working properly and are not clogged. Your wiper fluid is rated for to -20 degrees so it doesn’t freeze.

Tires – Tire tread depth should be checked to make sure that there is enough tread depth to handle the slick, wet weather. If your tires have the right amount of air and tread, they will be less likely to slide.

Winter Weather Kit – Stock your car or truck with a cooler weather kit.  Include an ice scraper, warm blanket, bottled of water, flashlight and emergency flashers. Travel with your phone charger and keep it at least half fully charged.

Investing the time and money on your car now can mean big savings later, no costly delays in the morning and keep your family safe as the leaves start to turn. Be sure to review this checklist with your favorite car mechanic at Master Tech Auto Repair to help ensure that you are ready for Autumn.
