Common Car Warranty Misconceptions

Posted on Jan 23, 2015

Do you worry that you will lose your car warranty by having regular service and repairs done at your neighborhood auto shop instead of at the dealership? If so, you’re not alone because many are under the misconception that they must get repairs and services done at the auto dealership in order to maintain their warranty.

A black PorcheThe Misconception & The Law
Rich White, Director of the Car Care Council, notes: “Many motorists wonder if they will void their factory warranty if someone other than the dealer services their vehicle. The truth is that consumers can have routine repairs performed by their local independent repair shop or do the work themselves without affecting the warranty. It is also important to note that using aftermarket parts does not void the warranty.”

Furthermore, not only can you get your vehicle serviced at the place of your choosing, but it is also lawful for you to be able to do so. “It is the law that consumers can patronize their neighborhood repair shop without violating the manufacturer’s warranty,” says the Car Care Council. Consumers are protected by the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act, enforced by the Federal Trade Commission (FTC), which prohibits a manufacturer from voiding the warranty because service was done elsewhere.
